Why Your Dentist Needs Dental X-rays: Explained

If you've ever wondered why your dentist needs to take dental X-rays during your visits, you're not alone. Many patients at Pearl Street Dental ask Dr. Mark Moynier, DDS, about the necessity and safety of these images. The truth is, dental X-rays are one of the most valuable diagnostic tools we have for maintaining your oral health and catching problems before they become serious and painful.

Why Dental X-rays Matter

While a visual examination can reveal a lot about your oral health, there's much happening beneath the surface that we can't see with the naked eye. Digital dental X-rays allow us to detect cavities between teeth, assess bone health, identify infections at the root level, and monitor the development of teeth in children. They're particularly crucial for spotting issues early when treatment is simpler and less expensive.

Types of Dental X-rays

Not all dental X-rays are the same. At our Boulder, CO, practice, we use different types of dental X-rays depending on what we need to examine:

Bitewing X-rays

These are the most common type and show the upper and lower teeth in one area of your mouth. They're excellent for detecting decay between teeth and monitoring bone loss from gum disease.

Periapical X-rays

These images capture the entire tooth from crown to root, including the surrounding bone. We use them to identify problems at the root tip or in the surrounding bone structure.

Panoramic X-rays

This type provides a complete view of all your teeth, jaws, sinuses, and the surrounding structures in a single image. It's particularly useful for planning orthodontic treatment, evaluating wisdom teeth, or assessing jaw problems.

Cone Beam CT

For complex cases, this three-dimensional imaging provides detailed views of bone structure, tooth orientation, and soft tissues, which is invaluable for implant planning and other advanced procedures.

How Often Should You Get Dental X-rays?

The frequency of dental X-rays varies based on your individual oral health needs. At Pearl Street Dental, Dr. Moynier determines the appropriate schedule based on several factors, including your age, oral health status, risk of disease, and any symptoms you're experiencing.

For most adults with good oral health, bitewing X-rays are typically recommended once every 1–2 years. If you're a new patient, we may recommend a full set of X-rays to establish a baseline for your oral health. Children may need X-rays more frequently as their teeth and jaws develop.

Patients with a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, or other ongoing dental issues may benefit from more frequent imaging, sometimes every 6-12 months, to monitor their condition and treatment progress.

The Benefits of Digital Dental X-rays

At our practice, we use digital dental X-rays, which offer significant advantages over traditional film X-rays. Digital technology reduces radiation exposure by up to 90%, produces instant images that can be enhanced for better diagnosis, and eliminates the environmental impact of chemical processing.

Digital dental X-rays also allow us to easily share images with specialists if needed and store them electronically for convenient comparison over time.

Safety and Minimal Exposure

We understand that some patients have concerns about radiation exposure. The reality is that modern dental X-rays expose you to extremely low levels of radiation, often less than you'd receive from natural background radiation in your daily environment. We also use lead aprons and thyroid collars for additional protection.
