Types of Dental Implants

There are several other types and variations of dental implants. When you schedule an appointment at Pearl Street Dental, we will consult with you to determine the best type of implant based on the number of missing teeth, condition of your jawbone, and any other specific needs you may have.

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are the most commonly used type of implant, providing a strong, long-lasting foundation for your replacement teeth. They are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone. After the surrounding gum tissue has healed, a second surgery is needed to connect a post to the original implant. Finally, an artificial tooth (or teeth) is attached to the post either individually, or grouped on a bridge or denture. They are usually shaped like small screws, cylinders, or plates, and are typically made of titanium, a material that has the capability of fusing with the bone.

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are a suitable alternative for patients with insufficient bone height who are unable to wear conventional dentures. Unlike endosteal implants, these implants are placed under the gum but on, or above, the jawbone. They are composed of a metal frame that is fitted onto the jawbone just below the gum tissue. As the gums heal, the frame is secured to the jawbone. Posts, which are attached to the frame, stick out through the gums so that the artificial teeth can be mounted onto them. Although they are less common than endosteal implants, subperiosteal implants serve as an effective choice for patients who lack the necessary bone volume or density to support endosteal implants.

How To Know If You're a Good Candidate for Dental Implants

Determining whether or not you are an ideal candidate for dental implants depends on several factors:

Healthy Gums

Since implants are intimately connected with the gum tissues in the mouth, you should have healthy gums free of periodontal disease.

Adequate Bone

For the implant to be successful, a sufficient amount of bone is needed to support the implant.

Good Overall Health

Certain systemic diseases and chronic conditions can affect the success rate of dental implants.

Why Choose Dental Implants Over Other Types of Dental Restorations

Click below to learn about each of the benefits dental implants offer:

One of the significant benefits of dental implants is that they serve as a durable and long-lasting replacement for missing teeth. Unlike dentures, which can shift and require replacements, dental implants are designed to fuse with the jawbone, making them steady and comfortable. Because of this, they are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth as they provide stability without impacting your speech or eating.

Dental implants improve oral health by making it easier to maintain good oral hygiene practices such as brushing and flossing, as compared to other restorative options like bridges or dentures. Improved oral health can have significant benefits for overall health, reducing risks of conditions like heart disease and infections.

By filling in the gaps left by missing teeth, dental implants can help prevent further bone loss, which is commonly associated with missing teeth. When a tooth is lost, the jawbone in the empty space deteriorates due to lack of stimulation. Dental implants provide that stimulation, effectively preventing bone loss. This is necessary for maintaining the health and structure of your jawbone.

The loss of one or more teeth can markedly impact the way an individual presents themselves to the world. Dental implants, however, look and feel like natural teeth, making them a great aesthetic solution for missing teeth. This can lead to a boost in confidence, positively impacting social interactions and personal wellbeing.
